S1E6: The Apple Never Falls…

Characters featured in this episode

Reverend David and his wife, Zoe.

Yaw Djimah, Zoe’s colleague

Davida (Pastor’s kid and Omar her ‘friend’)

Story so far

Dave has decided to follow Bishop Odame’s advice. It is the season to be keen on building more branches and expanding his church. He has been in ministry long enough, he should have more branches.

One main branch with two campus ministries is not cutting it. Blessing, Bishop Odame’s son will be spending some time with Davida to show her the ropes of campus ministry and church administration.

Zoe, his wife is struggling with certain feelings towards her colleague and boss, Yaw Djimah. Davida, their daughter, just like her mother is also battiling her emotions for Omar, her ‘friend’.

REVEREND DAVE

‘Thank you Lord for your blessings and answered prayers’ I said as I ended the midnight prayers with Zoe. I decided we commence a midnight vigil for the next couple of days to commit the future of the family into God’s hands. Zoe has been a bit distant of late, she claims everything is fine. I think I know the reason. For the past two months, I spent almost all the monthly allowance in our joint account to solve some church issues.

I do not know why she gets frustrated at these things. God is the one who gives money. When it is used for the kingdom, He always replenishes in multiples.

For some days now, I keep thinking to myself. What if she rejecting the promotion was a wrong move? Because, we need more money. Then again, she will be spending most of her time in Nigeria, close to Yaw, away from me and the children. Or would the children move with her? No way! I believe they are safer in Ghana and used to the system here. The decision to reject is the best one. The church needs to advance. I need her to join me, the days where she preaches or organises events, our offertory doubles. Anyway, she will be away for two weeks. Thank God there isn’t any major church activity slated where I will need her by my side. I wish she can join me next week on the interview panel for Damson’s replacement.

‘’Will you be able to drop me off at the airport?’’ Zoe asked as we settled back into bed.

‘’Unfortunately no, Madam Jessica is unveiling a new car and needs me to pray over it’’ I said.

‘’Can’t you do it after you drop me off?’’ she asked.

‘’No, she has a meeting right after unless we postpone it altogether. Moreover, I agreed to this before we got your flight details. Can’t the office arrange a driver for the drop-off?’’ I asked.

‘’It is quite late, but I can do that’’ she said in a disappointed tone.

‘’I am sorry, my beloved’’ I said.

‘’Don’t worry, greet Madam Jessica for me’’ she said and turned away from me.

Later in the day…

Zoe texted me that she had arrived safely in Abuja for her conference and training. Reverend Isaac was in the pastor’s office with me as we scanned through the CVs submitted by our church members.

‘’Why don’t we let Imelda shortlist and join the panel with us? She is an HR manager’’ I suggested, feeling overwhelmed by the information before me.

‘’Good thinking. I will call her after. And we need to talk about what happened last Sunday?’’ Pastor Isaac said.

Last Sunday, Kojo, an aggrieved member of the church walked out in the middle of my preaching. His mother was a long-time dedicated member and usher. She was one of my first members. She was ill for a while, and during her final illness. I failed to visit or call, repeatedly postponing till she unfortunately passed away. After her death, it was difficult to persuade Kojo to even proceed with her burial arrangements. He is disappointed in the church, in me…

He had been absent from church for some time. The day he finally returns, the sermon is focused on kindness and showing care. During the sermon, as everyone was listening attentively. I uttered the words ‘’No matter what, make time to care for the people who care about you’’. The moment those words left my mouth, Kojo abruptly stood up and stormed out. His beloved, Sena ran after him, trying to calm him down while Isaac chased after them.

This disrupted the service for a while. With the help of the choir, I was able to calm the congregation and proceed with the service.

‘’Have you called or paid a visit?’’ Isaac asked.

‘’Not yet’’ I answered.

‘’Reverend, I am not a fan of partiality in the church, where some members get special treatment from the pastor. But Kojo’s case is different, reach out to him. He is the one out of the 99 that needs to be carried back to the fold, I believe’’ he advised.

‘’What will I say? Nothing I do will bring Hilda back’’ I said referring to Kojo’s late mother.

‘’I know, but compassion goes a long way. Just reach out’’ Isaac said before exiting the office.

What will I say? Deep down, I feel shame for not reaching out when I should have. I will give him more time to calm down before I finally approach this matter….

DAVIDA

I stared at the email, my scholarship application has been rejected. My only way out of here has been shut down. I was banking on this application to get my dad to forget this campus ministry idea. I took a deep breath, I am definitely stuck in Ghana. I guess I have to buckle up and do the needful.

Later in the day, Blessing will be picking me up to run errands. Apparently Bishop Odame’s son is the best example to follow and learn from. I hope we finish early, Omar is having a pool party at his brother’s house. He invited me and I am excited to go. I have never attended one before.

Blessing came on time, he picked me up from the house. We had a nice chat as I followed him to run some errands for the church and the campus ministry. It was not so bad, he seems quite revered though he is only twenty-two years old. It must be one of the perks that comes with being the son of one of the nation’s biggest men of God. Blessing seemed put together, almost perfect, it was unsettling. From his dressing, speech and the memory verses he casually drops mid-conversation. This is the perfect pastor’s child, every parent’s dream. I completely understand why dad wants him to mentor me.

‘’So I hope you are having a good day and all this is not a bore’’ Blessing asked as we settled in a restaurant for lunch, right after visiting one of his dad’s branches to inspect the place.

‘’It is alright’’ I answered.

‘’Look, the difficult part has been done. By the grace of God, our parents have paved the way. Thank God, we do not have to start from the beginning without small luxuries like a car and a comfortable to place to sleep. We are the future, continuing their legacy is the greatest privilege. Do not be anxious for nothing, you got this’’ he said.

‘’I hope so’’ I said.

‘’Look, I know this may not be your dream and all, but trust me, you will find a way. You will find a balance. Remember you can always text me when you have any trouble or challenges’’ he assured.

‘’Thank you Blessing’’ I said.

‘’I am sure you are already exhausted from the day we have had, let me drop you at the church. Your father insisted I bring you in myself’’ he said.

‘’Ermmmm…just take me home’’ I stuttered.

‘’No, that is not going to happen. I have been warned by both men of God, that is our fathers, to bring you whole’’ he said.

‘’It is okay, just drop me off at church’’ I said sadly.

The church is around Ridge while Omar’s brother’s house is at Ayi-Mensa, about 28km distance between the two locations. Considering, the traffic situation around 2pm in Accra, I might as well forget this party.

‘’One will say you seem disappointed to leave me, but I know I am not that fun. Where do you have to go Davida? You can trust me. We are pastors’ kids but we have our own lives’’ he said.

I was reluctant at first, but he coerced me. It took a while but I eventually gave in.

‘’Just a pool party at Ayi-mensa’’ I answered reluctantly.

‘’I guess your parents are unaware right?’’ he asked

‘’Yes, but it’s alright. There is nothing to tell, just take me to my dad’’ I said.

‘’Oh, you are going to Ayi-mensa. Don’t worry at all. Finally! A pastor’s kid with some fire in her. Whew!’’ he exclaimed and relaxed all of a sudden like a weight had been lifted.

‘’Wait…’’ I was shocked.

He had this huge grin on his face. It was like a new personality had emerged. A mask drop if you call it. He became effeminate all of a sudden, I do not have problem with it. My mother taught me not to judge people.

‘’I will do you better, I will take you to Ayi-mensa on the condition that you will not swim at that party. I do not know how to explain to your dad if you drown. Plus drying your hair will take a while. So I will drop you off. At around 6pm, I come for you and send you back to your dad. I hope you have a change of clothes?’’ he asked.

‘’I don’t..’’ I stuttered, still shocked that he was helping me and the sudden change in personality.

‘’In case you are going to have sex. Do you have your bath soap, body cream etc on you? Parents like ours can smell fornication’’ he rambled.

‘’No, but I am not having sex’’ I was confused.

‘’Good. Girl, Is this your first time playing hooky?’’ he asked in a surprised tone.

‘’Yes…sort of’’ I answered.

‘’Oh girl! I do have a lot to teach you. You always have to come home looking and smelling the way you left. You need a complete new set of clothes, let us go to my friend’s shop, she has everything. What products do you use? We need to get you a hooky bag too’’ he said as he asked for bill so we can leave the restaurant.

I was in complete shock as Blessing helped me pick the best bikini for the pool party and a crochet beach dress to match. According to him, I should not take the dress off before a photo of my bare ass is posted online. He bought a small bag to keep my original clothes and my toiletry items. He then briefed me on safety, sending my location to him. Never exposing my drink, getting my own drinks and all other safety concerns.

Omar sent the location and Blessing drove me there.

‘’Look, have fun, do not take any alcohol or any gummies. We will save that for your next hooky. I want to break your alcohol virginity. Just keep me posted. I will pick you up at exactly 6pm and deliver you to Pastor Dave. Be safe okay’’ he said and zoomed off before I could ask him where he was going.

As soon as I walked into the house, I was glad Blessing made me change. I would have looked out of place in my wide leg jeans and T-shirt. The house was packed with approximately fifty teenagers, looking good and having fun. Omar run towards me and gave me a big hug.

‘’Happy you made it!!!’’ he whispered ‘’Come meet my friends and my brother’’.

He introduced me to his elder brother, Hakim who was seated with two other friends. They were there to chaperone the party I guess. I met some of Omar’s friends from his school. They were nice and warm.

‘’Your look? 10/10’’ Omar complimented.

‘’Thank you’’ I said.

‘’Did your parents see you leave the house in this?’’ he asked.

‘’No, I had a little help though. Does your dad know you are having half naked girls at your party?’’ I retorted.

‘’Hahaha, no, I had help from Hakim. That is why I am having a party at his house. I guess cheers to the people that make us live a little’’ he toasted with his paper cup.

‘’Cheers’’ I replied.

I was tempted to swim but I remembered Blessing’s warning, I promised not to. I doubt I will be able to dry my braids before I get home, plus the chlorine. Blessing is right, too much work for a first timer.

Due to Blessing’s warnings and counsel, I expected all the naughty things he spoke about. To my surprise, Omar’s party was not as wild as I pictured it. Just a bunch of 17-18 year olds having fun, dancing, eating and swimming. There was no alcohol, I noticed Hakim, Omar’s elder brother kept a watchful eye over everything. I wonder what kind of parties Blessing goes to. I spent most of my time at the party indoors playing UNO and Jenga with some of Omar’s friends. Two of the girls on the dance floor and poolside were influencers, the last thing I want is my face in their videos.

It was 5:30pm when Blessing texted that he will be picking me up soon.

‘’I will be leaving in 30’’ I whispered to Omar who brought me a plate of chicken khebab as I played my final card in the game of Uno.

‘’Oh…follow me’’ he took my hand and led me to the kitchen. It was just the two of us, I noticed there was an outdoor kitchen being constructed at the back but no one was there.

‘’Can’t you stay longer?’’ Omar pleaded.

‘’I wish but no. It was a miracle that I even made it in the first place’’ I said. He took my hand.

‘’I really wanted to see your swimsuit’’ he flirted.

‘’Maybe another time’’ I said sheepishly.

‘’I like the sound of that’’ he said and inched closer.

‘’So…what did you want to tell me?’’ I asked, trying to break the tension that was building.

‘’Oh yes, before that. I really like you, Davida. Everyone keeps asking if you are my girlfriend, I do not know how to answer. We talk everyday, enjoy the same things. Be my girlfriend?’’ he asked as he lifted me and placed me on the kitchen island so our faces will meet.

‘’Omar..’’ he planted a soft kiss on my lips to silence me. I was confused for a minute. My first time, my face felt warm. He was leaning in again and planted another, my lips trembled a bit. He stopped midway.

‘’Is this your first time?’’ he asked and I nodded in embarrassment and buried my face in his shoulder.

‘’Awwww, heyyy, relax. I got you, my precious Davie’’ he said and lifted my face ‘’Just copy me but the other direction’’ he instructed, he made me relax and guided me gently. In no time, I got a hang of it.

‘’No wonder your exam results were great, such a fast learner’’ he teased making me laugh as I slapped his strong chest.

‘’I have a good teacher’’ I teased.

‘’So is that a yes, are we doing this or what?’’ he asked

‘’Let me think about it’’ I answered and he seemed startled.

‘’Oh…okay. Do you want more kisses to convince you..’’ he started leaning in when my phone buzzed. It was Blessing, he was outside.

‘’My ride is here’’ I said as I got off the island.

‘’So soon’’ he pouted.

Omar walked me to the Blessing’s car, he hugged me closely before letting go and thanked Blessing for bringing me.

In the car with Blessing

‘’I know this guy, I was his senior in primary school. That is Alhaji Kanton’s son’’ Blessing remarked as we drove off.

‘’Yes’’ I confirmed.

‘’Eii Madam, ah well. Is he your boyfriend?’’ he asked.

‘’He asked me to be his girlfriend but I said I will think about it’’ I answered.

‘’I can see he likes you. Do you like him?’’ he asked.

‘’I do” I answered.

“So date the guy’’ Blessing said.

‘’We both know it will not go anywhere’’ I said.

‘’It does not have to. Baby girl, I am not that grown but not all relationships will lead to marriage. Dating a guy like that is good for your catalogue. Imagine, your first boyfriend is a Kanton, you can only go up from there. I have a lot to teach you’’   he said.

He then parked at a secluded area halfway through the journey.

‘’What are we doing here?’’ I asked.

‘’The windows at the back are tinted for a reason. Better grab your hooky bag, change before we get to your dad’s church’’ he said.

I totally forgot I had completely changed my look. He stepped out of the car to vape while waiting for me. We spoke about the party, I did not tell him about the kiss. Talking to Blessing is so easy, he is like the big brother I never had. I have met other pastor’s kids but we do not flow like this. When we got to the church.

‘’I had a great day Davida. Now your secret is safe with me if mine is safe with you’’ he said.

‘’Sure Blessing. Thank you too. Let’s do this again’’ I said.

‘’I thought you would never ask. When I saw you, I just felt I could trust you. But we have to be smart about it’’ he warned.

We hugged each other before he walked me to my father’s office. And just like that, he dropped his real self. Blessing, the son of Bishop Odame took over. My father thanked him and even gave him some money for fuel.

Back at the Osei mansion…

‘’How was your day with Blessing?’’ my dad asked.

‘’Great, it was an answered prayer. This morning, I got my scholarship rejection. I was very sad and anxious about it but hanging out with Blessing? It gave me hope and time to understand what you expect of me. He gave me a new perspective. I hope to learn more from him’’ I said

‘’Oh…wow. I am glad this worked out’’ my dad said.

He prayed for me before we said goodnight. I got a call from my mother and repeated the same speech to her. She sounded surprised, and comforted me in regards to the rejection. I slept off, dreaming of Omar’s lips.

Meanwhile in a beautiful resort in Abuja

ZOE

The first day of the training went well, a very packed agenda. I barely had time to socialise with any of my colleagues or Yaw. I ended the call with the children, listening to them talk about their day. Zack, our last born is already missing me. I wonder what Blessing said to Zoe, she seems suddenly comfortable with this whole ministry thing. There is something disconcerting about it. I know my children, Davida is not easily swayed into making a decision. She can be quite stubborn.

My call with Dave on the other hand did not end smoothly, we had a little misunderstanding. He wanted us to pray at midnight via video call. I thought we concluded our prayers the previous night, he says he has been led to continue. I tried to opt out but he said it is a command not a suggestion. I am already exhausted from the previous days and adding work to it is not helping. But I have to do the right thing, it is my calling as a wife. The bible says I should submit and that I will do.

I tried to sleep but I kept tossing and turning in bed. Just then I got a text message from Yaw

Hey, if you cannot sleep. I and some others are going for walk, wanna join?

I agreed and changed into something decent. We met at the lounge.

‘’Where are the others?’’ I asked when I noticed he was alone.

‘’They took the lead, decided to wait for you’’ he said.

The resort has a large green space with seating areas all over. We walked for a while and I still had not spotted any of our colleagues.

‘’Where are the others?’’ I asked Yaw again.

‘’I guess they returned or took another route. You seem quiet, is everything okay?’’  he asked distracting me from the fact that we were alone in a secluded area.

I then mentioned my discomfort concerning Davida’s quick acceptance of everything as well as the Omar incident he overheard the last time.

‘’Zoe, you are one of the people I know with good instincts. Not in all cases but hey, just take your time and be there for her. I can reach out to her if you want. You know Davida loves her Uncle Yaw’’ he said.

‘’Don’t worry, I am sure Dave can handle it. And what do you mean by my instincts not being right in some cases?’’ I asked

‘’Your decision to marry Dave. I doubted it all the time but you rejecting that promotion just confirmed it’’ he said and we stopped.

‘’Leave Dave out of this. It was my decision!’’ I said sternly, getting tired of this topic.

‘’You can lie to yourself Zoe, but not to me. You like money, you are drawn to it. You enjoy being admired for your intelligence. You know you are smarter than Dave but you downplay it to protect his ego. You deliberately make certain life choices that make me question what power he has over you’’ Dave complained as he faced me, looking concerned.

‘’He is my husband and I do not like your tone’’ I warned.

”What makes Dave so special?” he asked, inching closer.

”Yaw, I do not like your tone” I warned again.

‘’Apologies’’ he said and walked me back to my hotel room.

‘’I am very sorry for everything. Just know I am here when you need me’’ he said and spread his arms for a hug. I hesitated, the gave in. He held me tight, reluctant to let go. For some reason, it felt nice and comforting.  I rested my head against his chest, Yaw has always smelled good.

‘’Take a deep breath, you look stressed’’ he said gently and I did ‘’Another’’ he urged and I obeyed.

‘’Everything will be alright’’ he whispered. It felt like a heavy weight had been lifted off my shoulders. He planted a kiss on top of head and let me go. As soon as I entered my room, Dave kept incessantly calling. I was not in the mood to pray, a girl needs to rest. I have a long day ahead.

At the end of the first week

One of the female executives from the Ivory Coast branch, Aurora sat with me during dinner after another long day. She needed a quick consult on the application we used. Aurora is your confident sexy francophone corporate woman who does not only kill it in the boardroom but with fashion as well. I love her thick francophone accent.

‘’You are so smart. I was disappointed when I heard you refuse the promotion. Now we have to deal with misogynistic James. It is basically a boys club at that level, I was excited to have another woman with me, you know. Only to hear, you say no. You have to focus on family’’ she ranted, Aurora is known for her bluntness.

‘’It is important to me’’ I said.

‘’Family is important to everybody, I am married too. Any man that makes you take a choice between promotion and him is not worth it. Let him go, the kids will be alright. We need more women at the top, our daughters need to look up to us and say my mother kick ass’’ she kept ranting, making me sad and Yaw who was at the table nearby noticed my discomfort walked towards us.

‘’Aurora, let this go. Everybody has a choice’’ He said.

‘’I know, it is just stupid choice’’ she said and before we could utter another word, she took out a cigarette pack and cut us off ‘’Need a smoke’’ she added and strutted off.

‘’Ignore her, that is Aurora for you. I think she took your rejection more personal than I did’’ he teased and I smiled.

‘’I can see that’’

‘’A couple of us are tired of being cooped up in a hotel, we are going to town. Want to join?’’ Yaw asked.

‘’I don’t think so’’

‘’Look, you have been trying to get Mr. August’s attention about a policy. Trust me, you will have his attention if you step out with us. Have faith in me, it is not any where crazy’’ Yaw suggested.

‘’Hmmmm..’’ I wasn’t so sure.

‘’Zozo, live a little. It is just an outing with colleagues. We are not taking you to hell, even Jesus dined with sinners. Just have a drink, you can take just mocktails. Have a drink with mere mortals like us’’ he urged and I agreed.

I hated to admit it but Yaw was right. It was a place with this amazing live band, the mocktails were good but the cocktails? even better. I danced with Mr August and other colleagues. I managed to book an appointment with him to discuss the policy later. Aurora also apologised for the reaction earlier and managed to convince me to take some shots. Her way of us making peace. I have never had shots, I hated the taste but loved the burn it left in my chest.

YAW

Zoe was on the dance floor leading the team with dance moves. I haven’t seen her like this since the first company end of year party, before she started rolling with preacher boy. Speaking of him, her phone buzzed. I noticed he was calling. I quickly turned the phone away in order not to distract her.

I was busy admiring her when Zoe spotted me, she beckoned me to the dance floor.  We danced till the band closed for the night. I noticed she was slightly tipsy and she mentioned Aurora had them do shots. How did I miss that? I am sure it was when I had to take a call from my children.

We all returned to the hotel, almost everybody was half-drunk and others, high. I walked Zoe to her room again.

‘’Oh No, it is 3am. It is so late, where did time go?’’ she exclaimed looking at her smart watch.

‘’That is what happens when you have fun. So when your kids start to come home late after partying with their friends, you know what to tell them’’ I said and she laughed.

‘’I guess I understand some of the young ones. I never went clubbing or late night outings. I mean this seemed like a cleaner version because it was a live band and most of the audience were older’’ she said.

‘’Well, when you are ready to pop bottles and have a full experience. I am available to take you’’ I said.

‘’Not happening, before someone takes a video of me and post it on social media. Please, I will not hear the end of it’’ she said.

‘’True, you have a reputation to uphold’’ I said.

‘’Thank you for tonight. I had fun’’ she said.

‘’Always welcome’’ I said and turned to leave.

‘’No hug?’’ she asked

‘’Sure’’ I walked back and hugged her

‘’You always smell good’’ she complimented with her face buried in my chest.

‘’You too’’ I said and lifted her face towards me. ‘’You ..always…look …good…too’’ I whispered, placing a gentle kiss with each word on her forehead, left cheek, her right and finally the tip of her nose…

I do not know whether it was the alcohol or the hug, but she did not wrestle out of my arms. I leaned in and kissed her. We kissed for a while before I let go.

‘’I want to go on, but we all know how this ends Zozo. Let us blame it on the alcohol’’ I lied and walked away. She was still dumbfounded. I smiled to myself, one step at a time.

ZOE

I woke up the next morning to a debit alert of 2000 ghs from the joint account with the reference ‘’Brunch with the kids’’. I am sure Dave took them to a restaurant. I wonder what happened to waakye. After taking a shower, there was another one with the reference ‘fuel’. I exhaled, trying to control my nerves, his fuel costs more than mine. I advised against the purchase of a Lexus but it suited a pastor of his status, he said. And then there is me, the one who contributes the most, driving a Honda CRV. Yaw is right about some of the decisions I take.

Out of nowhere, Yaw’s kiss flooded my mind. I felt guilty, what came over me? we need to talk about this. I dressed up and marched to his suite. I was sceptical but as I inched closer, I met Aurora and Mr. August as they stepped out of the room. I guess it is normal to hang in the CEO’s suite. We exchanged pleasantries before they departed. The moment I entered the suite, I was greeted with smell of brandy and cigar. I sat on the couch.

‘’Sorry for the smell, I know you hate it’’ he said as he opened the window for the smell to escape, and sprayed a bit of his perfume.

‘’I guess the party continued without me’’ I said.

‘’We figured you are not the cigar type’’ he said.

‘’True, ermmm…we need to talk about last night’’ I blurted.

‘’What is there to talk about Zoe? Nothing happened’’ he feigned ignorance.

‘’Yaw, we can not just brush this under the carpet’’ I said.

‘’Zoe, I know how this will go. You will say we should have a professional relationship. And when I start having that with you, you will come back and say you miss our friendship. That is the cycle with you. This happened when you got married, the rent issue. When you had the breastmilk incident, and I shopped for you. When I bought you that Chanel bag, you returned it because Dave was uncomfortable. When I paid for a spa treatment because you were basically walking like the hunch-bag of Notre Dam, which you refunded because of Dave. I have a lifetime of examples. Should I keep going?’’ he ranted as he sat on the centre table and faced me.

He was right, any time he extended a kind gesture and I have an uncomfortable conversation with Dave. The next day, I make a dramatic entrance warning him about boundaries while returning or refunding the gifts, He gives me space and then I run back saying I miss my friend.

‘’Can’t we be friends without all those shenanigans?’’ I said.

‘’It is not my fault I do nice things for my friends. Apart from last night…that is reserved for people I love’’ he said and reached for my hands, staring at me intently. The last time he said those words were the night before my wedding.

‘’oh Yaw! Please don’t make this difficult. I am married!’’ I exclaimed.

‘’Hey, I am not saying do anything about it. I just want to let you know that I love you. I always have, this is no surprise. Just know that, we can move on and pretend like yesterday never happened, or lets see where it goes’’ he said, planted a kiss on my cheek, stood up and took off his shirt, showing off his broad chest.

‘’I need to take a shower, unless you want to join me so we can continue from last night. Or you can see yourself out and we pretend it never happened’’ he added and I was stumped.

A part of me wanted to run out of the room, the other wanted to follow and see what the fuss is about. I have known Yaw for a long time. I have heard women speak of him in ways that lingered in my mind longer than they should have. Some of his exes reach out to me to plead on their behalf, some were not the type to hold back the reason they want to be with him. I have seen what others were willing to do after being left by him.

Things in the bedroom with Dave are fine, but he is the only man I have been with. There is no marking scheme or standard to be compared to. My eyes were fixated on him, should I just go with it? My curiosity and desire were battling my spirit. For some reasons, all the memory verses I knew on temptation had disappeared from my brain.

Just then my phone rang, it was Zoe calling. Whew! Relief washed over me. I answered and briskly walked out of the room.

God bless my daughter for that timely call. What the heck was I thinking?

Remember Agnes and Tetteh? (our favourite gossip duo)

Tetteh rushed home with some kelewele. It is friday night, time to spend time with his beloved wife, Agnes. Their daughter, Amy, was already asleep.

In the middle of their movie as they munched on the kelewele.

Tetteh: I cannot believe I almost forgot this kokonsa.

Agnes paused the movie.

Agnes: What’s up?

Tetteh: What my eyes saw today?

Agnes: Talk fast.

Tetteh: You know I have been put on a small contract to supervise the renovation of Hakim Kanton’s house.

Agnes: The Alhaji’s first born, the one at Ayi-Mensa. I thought you were done.

Tetteh: Almost, just left with some finishing touches. So the tiler left my tile-cutter there earlier in the day. I decided to pick it up before the weekend comes and it gets missing. I called Hakim in advance, he mentioned his younger brother was having a party so he let me in through the back gate. The cutter was left at the outdoor kitchen. I was just going to pick up my tool and leave oo. There nooor, my eyes landed in the kitchen. I saw two people kissing, two teenagers, so passionately. I was about to shout at them then I noticed the boy looked like Hakim so I held my tongue.

Agnes: Ei, small kids are young. It is good you kept your mouth shut. It is not you who will advise a rich man’s son. Just do your work and pass.

(Agnes pressed play to continue the movie)

Tetteh: hehehe, I am not done oo.

(Agnes paused the movie again)

Agnes: Ei! Talk fast, my ear sweet me.

Tetteh: There are certain angles of a person you can spot from Jupiter. The girl this boy was kissing is Davida!

Agnes: Are you sure? Davida Osei? Rev’s daughter?

Tetteh: Which other one do you know?

Agnes: Are you sure?

Tetteh: I waited in my car outside to confirm. Not long, he escorted her into a sleek car. It was difficult to spot the driver. I am sure it was one of his father’s chauffeurs.

Agnes: I am surprised ooo. Because Davida is our star girl, osofoba papabi. So will you tell Rev or Mama Zoe?

Tetteh: No ooo, so they will think I am a gossip? No way! As you said, it is not my place to advise a rich man’s child wai. Let us watch our movie.

(Tetteh resumed their movie and they watched, pausing to share stories of other escapades they had heard about teenagers. They prayed their daughter Amy, will grow to be a good girl).
