Story so far

After years of tears and manipulation, Reverend Dave and Zoe’s divorce is finalised. He is still unaware she has a job in Houston lined up. Jordan and Shika are enjoying marital bliss while holding the church together. Nuerkie and Terry are officially dating, will Mama Jessica accept her daughter’s choice? Imelda decided to give Minister Kelly a chance, with the hope of finally settling down. Will Yaw Djimah finally let Zoe go? Or take Edem up on her offer? And there is Kojo who was left heartbroken by Sena and the church, will he ever heal?

REVEREND DAVE

It has been four months since the ink dried on those divorce papers. Zoe will be away in the USA for four months, she mentioned something about a consulting job. I will bill her later but right now, I am focused on other things. I will not lie; the church has taken quite a hit. It is not that serious but I have lost a number of young ladies, people who joined the church because of Zoe. In their place, some older, more mature women have replaced them. I did not have plans of remarrying but I have no choice. This is to keep the church together as well as my image.

Suddenly, Pastor Isaac is the most revered pastor. I made the mistake of allowing him to be in charge of the second new branch. He has garnered the respect of majority of the older congregants. After all, he is still married, his children are established. He is the perfect example of a pastor. Of late, some of his preaching videos have been going viral. It seems people are forgetting he is under my ministry, not the other way around. Prophet Odame has advised me to keep a watchful eye, or else he will steal my branch from me.

For some time now, I have been going on certain dates. It has been interesting… I made my mother move in with us in order to ward off the unwarranted advances of some women. There are two particular women who insist on coming for late night prayers in my house. After three occasions where I made my mother lead the prayers, they stopped coming.

The attention is nice, I am a pastor, I will not lie. It feels good to be wanted. But some of these women have nothing on Zoe. If I have to remarry, the lady must be wealthier and finer than Zoe. I have to upgrade. I have been reaching out and talking to some ladies outside the church, obviously believers. There is this particular lady I find fascinating, she is very wealthy. I have seen her around a couple of times, but managed to engage her in conversation when I was invited to preach at the church she worships.

I wore a beautiful shirt and trousers, applied my perfume oil, I will be meeting this lady for a date. We have been texting more frequently than usual. I have kept the texts PG, nothing that will implicate me, just decent, knowing me- knowing you conversation. It is by grace my reputation has not been tainted by this divorce, my downfall will not be caused by a few text messages. This is our first official date.

She chose the place, a cute upscale but private restaurant. I am a single man, I am allowed to date.

I arrived at the venue five minutes earlier and watched her walk in. She owns two companies, and a single mother of two. I can already visualise her sitting by my side at events and helping me build more branches. She looks amazing in a fitting brown dress, with heels. The short bob haircut looked good on her, but I love a woman with long hair. A woman’s hair is her glory. If we end up together, she will have to stop cutting her hair.

“Good evening Reverend” she greeted with a broad smile. I stood up and gave her an innocent side hug.

“Good evening Edem” I replied.

Yes, Edem, Yaw Djimah’s baby mama number two. She was still standing when I took my seat. It took me a while to notice that she wanted me to pull out her chair. I apologised and quickly did the right thing.

“Sorry, I have been off the market for a long time” I said.

“Don’t worry. It’s alright” she smiled.

It was now time to order, and I cannot believe she ordered a whole bottle of wine. Who does that in Ghana? We were mid-conversation about raising children and life when I heard a deep familiar voice.

“WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON HERE?” it was Yaw. He walked in with two other men, I am guessing his friends.  He stormed to our table.

“DAVE! WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THIS?” he shouted, looking like he was about to tear me apart.

“Yaw, relax, you are causing a scene.” Edem said sternly and he took a deep breath.

“Someone better start talking” he said, lowering his voice but still firm.

“We are on a date” Edem answered.

“On…a…” he stuttered and burst into laughter.

“And you have no right to tell me who to date” Edem added.

“Dave, this ends today. I will walk to my table and you two wrap up whatever this is! Edem, if you know what is good for you, you will avoid this buffoon”

“Yaw! I will not sit here for you to insult me!” I retorted sternly.

“Wrap it up!” he said, ignoring me before storming back to his table.

“What did you do to him?” Edem asked me.

“Nothing, I don’t know what Zoe has told him” I said.

“Well, we are both adults. No one can tell us who to date” She said and I agreed. We enjoyed our meal as Yaw kept shooting us menacing looks.

I noticed he was getting ready to return to our table when I signalled the waiter to bring the bill.

The bill was above my budget, but I will not give Yaw the satisfaction of seeing me ask Edem to split the bill. As soon as I paid, Yaw appeared.

“You can go, I will take Edem home” he said sternly.

“I brought my own car” she argued.

“Don’t worry. I will let my driver take it home for you” he said.

“Come on Yaw, let me walk her to the car at least. I am a gentleman” I suggested.

“I will take the mother of my children home” he insisted.

“Noted. I am a man of peace, so I will just take my leave. We will talk later, Edem. Have a good night Yaw” I said and walked away.

I hope Edem will be able to stand her ground. She will make a lovely first lady of Radiant Life Ministry. If not, Pastor Armah mentioned he wanted to introduce me to Patience Acheampong, she is one of the largest distributers of baby products in the whole southern part of the country. She is a wealthy widow and currently the MP for her hometown. Her political party wants her to be the future trade minister and then later, nation’s vice president when they win the next elections. This will be easy for her but the other woman in her party who is vying for the same position, is already married to a popular lawyer, a known prolific philanderer. According to Armah, Patience getting married to a man like me will boost her chances. After all, a romantic beloved well-known pastor of a church who does not cheat.

Thank God for the options he has bestowed on me since Zoe left. The Lord will never abandon his own, He is indeed a gracious God. When I finally settle down, be it with Edem or Patience, the testimony I will share will shake the nations!

ZOE

I lied to Dave, I did not tell him the Houston job is permanent. I will be away for four months and return for David’s high school graduation. Davida and I have grown so close, Dave still tries some of his antics with me. I have asked her to ignore him and respect him as her father. So far, the children are alright, I miss them so much. I am also glad that Dave’s mother has moved in with them. Though we disagree on certain issues, at least there is a strict eye in the house watching the children. We have scheduled video calls so I can speak to them regularly while away.

I hope Dave is able to move on quickly, remarry before I let him know the Houston job is permanent. Per his knowledge, it is a consulting job that will keep extending. Ewoenam brought the children to see me off at the airport the day I departed.

Settling in a new country is a lot but for the first time a long time. I am alone, I got married three years after university. From my parents’ house straight to my marital home. I have never had the chance to travel and live alone before, apart from the separation and divorce period. There is something freeing about this. I feel guilty for leaving my children sometimes, but I need to take care of myself too. Carrying all that bitterness in my heart towards Dave made me easily irritable.

According to Davida, I have become a better mother ever since I divorced her father. I pay closer attention to their emotional needs and barely snap at them. Here I am, many kilometres away from them. This divorce has cost me, a huge financial gap in my life. I cannot believe I let Dave take the house, I was desperate to run away. Look at me starting afresh, in another country. I spent most of the money from Purple Linen, on my relocation and other things. The pay is great and with time, I hope to rebuild my finances. Starting over at 45, wow….

Just then a call from Yaw interrupted me. I have been avoiding him more often these days. I have never been alone before, jumping from marriage into a situation-ship with Yaw is not healthy. In addition, the one night I decided to let lose. God’s divine intervention saved me. I hesitated before finally picking up.

“How are you settling in my love?” he asked.

“Good, just finished lunch, sitting in my office at the moment” I replied.

“Good to know, guess who I saw at La Chaumière today, on a date?” he asked

“Regine?” I asked, referring to his first baby mama.

“Nope, your ex. Oh! I do love the sound of that! Ex!”

“Dave?”

“Yes, and he was on a date with Edem, my Edem” he exclaimed.

“What??? From where to where? Herh! She better run!” I exclaimed.

“I have brought her home, she is here. Let me put it on loudspeaker”

“Hey Zoe, how are you?” Edem greeted and we exchanged pleasantries.

“I hope you have not fallen in love with him yet?” I asked.

“Oh, not that gone, we have been talking” she said, in a dreamy tone.

“Edem, you are one of the smartest women I know. Run for the hills, Dave is sweet in the beginning, he will win your trust. Then squeeze you dry, he will not physically abuse you. But emotionally and financially? Get ready. Edem run ooo, I beg you in the name of God. You see the money he spent on dinner, he will find a way to get it back. Now, he might borrow money from you and then pay back immediately. The next time, he won’t. Give him 48 hours, he will call and ask for a loan and pay back in less than day. Mark my words, that is just the beginning”

“Whoa. Okay… I hear you” she said.

She was clearly not convinced, I just pray she does not learn the hard way.  Well, a word to the wise is enough as they say. After, Yaw and I spoke for a while before we hang up. It is not even a year, Dave is already finding a replacement, a rich one too. The victim he will bleed dry. Well, I pray for their souls, not everyone can be saved from Almighty Reverend Dave Osei.

YAW

It has been three days since I saw Edem and Dave on a date. I hope Zoe’s prediction about his actions come to pass. That night, Edem and I had a heart to heart talk. Here I am, staring at her presentation again, I might go ahead and marry her. If doing so will prevent the likes of Dave from entering my family then so be it. I asked my lawyers to draw a prenup, after all Zoe and I are not happening any time soon.

I returned home after a long day at work to see Edem seated at the kitchen counter, drinking wine. She loves wine…

“Zoe was right…” she said after taking a huge gulp.

“What happened?” I asked.

“He was supposed to come over for tea, at my place, you know afternoon tea” she started. I have forgotten how bourgeois Edem can be sometimes.

“I hope he didn’t harm you” I got closer, taking a good look at her.

“No, halfway to the meeting time, he calls saying his car fell into a gutter on his way to my place and he needs money to fix it. He promised to pay, he requested a sum of 3000, approximately the amount he spent on dinner. I just shook my head, said bye and blocked him” she narrated, disappointed.

“Another one bites the dust” I said and she nodded.

I hugged her, we stayed close for a while. One thing led to another and we started kissing, the last time we had sex was for the twins. Edem always has her guard up, but this time she let it down. I had forgotten how good she was the first time we had sex. She fell asleep in my arms.

The next morning…

I woke up to see her quietly picking up her clothes, trying to escape.

“Where are you running to?” I asked.

“Oh, didn’t want to wake you up” she said.

“Come back to bed, today is a Saturday, lets sleep and continue from last night” I suggested.

“No, Yaw, last night was a mistake. I don’t want to confuse the girls” she said.

“What if it wasn’t a mistake? I was looking over your proposal yesterday by the way. I started talking to my lawyers so…”

“So? Yaw, I will not finish your sentences for you” she said.

I got out of bed, walked to her and held her hands.

“What if we get married? I mean, they say marry your friends. We were friends before you turned me into your sperm donor. It should not be that difficult…I don’t mind trying monogamy. Once it is not working for me, I will let you know. You know how we roll Edem” I said.

“I mean, is it because I have started dating? You know I will not marry just anyone right? Dave was just a slip up” she said.

“Why aren’t you happy about this? I mean you proposed we get married” I said.

“Yes, but without the sex. It was just meant to be a piece of paper to protect our daughters. We get to live our individual lives, Yaw. My proposal was more like a business deal. Now you want like a marriage for real? You and I both know we don’t mix business with pleasure” Edem stated as she turned for me to zip her up.

“Can’t we try at least?” I asked.

“Yaw, I will give you time to think about it. Don’t let last night’s tumble in the sheets blind you” she added and turned to face me.

“I will, but you too think about what I am saying. Let’s give it a shot! If it doesn’t work, we resume marriage as a business. I know you enjoyed yourself last night too” I said as I leaned in and we started kissing.

Immediately, my door flung open.

“Yaw, you are out of eg…” Regine barged in, her jaw dropped at the sight of us. I forgot about her passing through to drop Junior off for the next two weeks. Even though he is fifteen and can find his way to my house. She insists on bringing him.

“Good morning Regine” Edem greeted as she smoothened her hair.

“Sɛ agye w’ani so! 1 I have told you on several occasions to knock before you enter” I said.

“I…I… wait. First. You are out of eggs. I wanted to fry some for Jayden. And when did this start? Whatever this is! I didn’t know you FUCKED your baby mamas” Regine sneered after gaining her composure.

“What happens between Edem and I is none of your business Regine” I said sternly.

“It…”

“Now, kindly leave my room. I will meet you downstairs. I have unfinished business with Edem” I interrupted her and she reluctantly walked away.

“Ouuuu! This is going to be messy!” Edem said gleefully.

“Leave Regine to me” I said.

“So, where were we?” I asked, unzipping her dress again.

After another round, we showered together and then I went to hang with Junior for a while before heading to the kitchen. I saw Edem wearing one of my shirts as she helped herself to some breakfast, Regine kept glaring at her. Edem seem unbothered, she enjoys taunting Regine.

“Where are your daughters?” Regine asked.

“They are with my mother for the weekend” she replied.

“So, are you staying here? Junior is here to spend time with his father” Regine said.

“I know, but where I stay is none of your business” Edem replied.

“I think it is unfair” Regine said.

“What is unfair?” I asked.

“Edem spends time with you” she answered.

“Ermmm. Regine. In case you have forgotten, I am not married to any of you. This is not a polygamous marriage. We just happen to have kids together. You are free to date whoever you want” I said.

“We wanted to be sure before we declare anything. We are trying to work some issues out” Edem answered with a twinkle in her eye.

“Try what?” Regine asked.

“Dating, the kids need something solid. Don’t you think? Instead of the numerous whores Yaw brings here” Edem said to Regine.

“Heyyyy. I am right here!” I said. Regine just rolled her eyes.

“I have to go. I know Yaw, this…will not last so don’t keep your hopes up, Edem” she said and waltzed away.

“So.. does this mean we are giving us a chance?” I asked Edem.

“Yep, I mean, if it ends, it ends” she answered.

“You seem more excited about getting under Regine’s skin than marrying me” I said.

“Two for one” she replied and shrugged.
